Threads is a new app released by Instagram that serves as a text-based conversation platform, allowing users to share photos and videos as well. It is considered a direct competitor to Twitter, offering features similar to other social media apps. Users can follow other accounts, participate in public conversations, and post their own content.

The app’s social feed displays posts from people you follow, as well as recommended content from other creators. Posts can be up to 500 characters long and can include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes in length. Getting started with Threads is simple: users need an Instagram account and must be logged into the Instagram app. The app is available for both iPhone and Android devices.

To access Threads, users can navigate to their Instagram profile page and click on the three-line icon to reveal the option for Threads. Clicking on this option will redirect them to the App Store, where they can download the app. Alternatively, they can directly search for Threads and Instagram in the App Store.

Upon opening Threads and logging in with their Instagram account, users have the option to import their username, bio, and name from Instagram. They can choose to have a public or private account, where they can approve followers. The app utilizes data from Instagram to facilitate a seamless transfer of information.

Threads’ home page displays a feed of posts, including those from followed accounts and suggested content. The search function allows users to find and follow other accounts. The compose feature enables users to create their own threads with a maximum length of 500 characters. The app also provides a notifications section, showcasing activities such as replies and mentions. The profile page displays user posts and replies, with options to edit the profile and access settings.

Interacting with posts is easy, with options to follow, unfollow, like, comment, and share. Sharing options include reposting on the user’s profile, sending as a message, or sharing on other platforms like Twitter. Privacy options allow users to manage their connections by following, unfollowing, muting, or hiding other accounts.

Posting on Threads involves typing in the text box or adding photos and videos. Users can select images from their device’s gallery. Once posted, these media files appear on the user’s profile page, where others can engage with them through likes, comments, and shares.

Threads provides the convenience of a text-based messaging app with the added ability to share photos and videos. Its integration with Instagram allows for seamless user experience and familiarity. Users can easily communicate, engage with content, and connect with others on this platform.

Now… for our thoughts:

We’re not sure why someone with an established Twitter presence would want to contribute to just “another Twitter Clone”. This feels like Mastedon and the other “Twitter clones” we’ve seen recently. The look, the feel, the content… it’s just Twitter. The only conveinence is for those not active on Twitter but uses Instagram as their platform of choice.
As far as the Meta ads platform, Mark Zuckerberg said the company would only think about monetization once there was a clear path to 1 billion users. So the benefit of this being another placemtn for ads in your Meta Ads Manager isn’t even a perk of this.

Will Threads just be another failed Meta project or will it actually pull users away from Twitter? Will this have the same fate as Facebook Gifts, Libra Crypto, Slingshot, or even their Metaverse (yes, we consider it a fail – the metaverse was supposed to be a way to achieve total remote work, but apparently, not every company is interested in that setup). We’re skeptical – but we’ll see.

Within a few hours of the launch we’ve already managed to crash the app numerous times so not a strong start, but also exactly what we would expect from the current state of Meta and their social focused platforms.
